Victorville, Calif. – The High Desert Opportunity Committee is proud to announce that Billy Beane, the Major League Baseball Oakland Athletics General Manager and subject of the New York Times bestselling book and upcoming Sony Pictures motion picture Moneyball, will serve as Keynote Speaker for the 2011 High Desert Opportunity business conference.
The annual event will be held on Thursday, October 20th, 2011 at the San Bernardino County Fairgrounds in Victorville, CA. The conference aims to draw “out of the area” business owners, commercial real estate brokers, developers and site locators to the High Desert region.
As the revolutionary GM of the Oakland A’s, Billy Beane has turned the cash-strapped, small market baseball team into bonafide contenders who, for years now, have made the playoffs alongside monoliths like the Yankees. Against a howl of league-wide criticism, Beane redefined the most tradition-bound of sports and revealed the game’s economics — indeed, corporate-America’s economics — to be out of whack. Instead of relying on flawed “gut-feel” methods used in the sport since its inception, Beane set out to focus on powerful analysis and a close reading of the right kind of statistics to evaluate players. Beane’s methods have transformed baseball, as well as other sports and how they evaluate talent, measure productivity and maintain a competitive edge.
Beane’s inspiring tale of a modern day David vs. Goliath was illustrated in the 2003 New York Times bestseller Moneyball. Author Michael Lewis focused on Beane’s story of what it really takes to succeed, and succeed big, with limited resources in baseball and the business world. Sony Pictures will release a feature film based on the book and Billy Beane’s story on September 23rd, 2011. The movie Moneyball will star Brad Pitt as Billy Beane, along with actors Jonah Hill, Robin Wright and Philip Seymour Hoffman. In addition to the demands as GM of the Oakland A’s, Billy Beane also has become a minority owner of the team, and serves on the Board of Directors for NetSuite, a business management software company.
