FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
HIGH DESERT OPPORTUNITY AWARDS STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS
The High Desert Opportunity Board of Directors and Committee are pleased to announce the Victor Valley College scholarship winners for performance excellence during the 2014 High Desert Opportunity Conference. Robyn Stewart, Kanasha Lattimer, Christopher Hernandez, Tabbitha Brown and Patrick Madison were each awarded $200 scholarships.
For the past five years, HDO has partnered with VVC to obtain student volunteers to help with setup prior to the event, as well as working in a number of capacities during the event. This year VVC provided 20 student intern volunteers. According to VVC Business Department Chair and Faculty Dave Holloman, HDO gives the students an opportunity to learn event planning and marketing and improve organizational, time management and human relational skills, along with the opportunity to network with local leaders in business, education and government.
Normally in exchange for the student volunteers, HDO presents $1,000 to the College Foundation for scholarships. This year, however, at the college’s request, HDO chose five individual students for their outstanding work, dividing the $1,000 between them.
Award recipients Hernandez and Lattimer were honored and surprised. The experience taught Hernandez to always give extra and do more than what’s needed. Lattimer, an aspiring entrepreneur, learned the importance of networking in getting a business off the ground and plans to use the award money to replace a stolen laptop.
HDO President Gwen Bedics presented the scholarships during the January 13 VVC Board of Trustees Meeting. “The partnership with VVC is a win-win,” said Bedics. “We receive excellent help, and the students receive hands-on experience in the business world.”
