High Desert Opportunity’s Discover The Difference
VICTORVILLE, CA – High Desert Opportunity (HDO), the premier High Desert event annually showcasing local businesses and development opportunities for new and expanding businesses is taking their show on the road this year presenting Discover the Difference on October 20, 2016, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Victoria Gardens Cultural Center in Rancho Cucamonga.
Thirty-five years ago a group of volunteers started High Desert Opportunity (HDO). Their mission: to promote economic growth by presenting a conference that showcases business opportunities in the High Desert. In 1982 the first HDO Conference was held the third week of October at Spring Valley Lake Country Club. The event was moved to the San Bernardino County Fair Grounds, now known as the High Desert Event Center, in 1985 and incorporated as a nonprofit corporation in California in 1987.
The early HDO conferences included phone banks for attendees to conduct business, and bus tours to highlight the many properties available in the High Desert. As time and technology evolved, so has HDO. Cell phones replaced the need for phone banks, and properties displayed on the Internet replaced the need for bus tours. This year marks another point of evolution for High Desert Opportunity.
In order to promote economic growth in the High Desert, HDO has to reach their target audience outside of the High Desert. Historically, only ten to fifteen percent of conference attendees are from out of the area, so the HDO committee took a three step approach to finding a solution. First, stakeholders were invited to a workshop to brainstorm possible solutions. Second, the HDO committee went over a number of years of conference feedback cards to see if there were any common suggestions pertaining to this problem. Third, a taskforce of HDO committee and non-committee members, representing banks, brokers, and municipalities, was formed to pinpoint any recurrent suggestions and come up with a plan of action.
The one suggestion that kept coming up time and time again was: If our target audience wasn’t going to come to us, we needed to go to them. The HDO Board of Directors unanimously voted to try something new this year, to take our message to our audience, and High Desert Opportunity Discover the Difference was born.
Rancho Cucamonga was chosen as the site for the first Discover the Difference event because it’s close enough to entice attendees from Orange and Los Angeles Counties, as well as the Inland Empire. It will be an HD Theatre format held in an intimate theater-setting at the Cultural Center in Victoria Gardens to highlight business success stories, access to logistics, an eager workforce and affordable housing. It’s essentially a teaser event to entice people back to the Victor Valley for our 2017 event.
High Desert Opportunity’s mission continues to remain the same: to promote economic growth by presenting a conference that showcases business opportunities in the High Desert. HDO events are organized by a volunteer group of approximately 30 local business professionals and community leaders. Volunteers, from all walks of life, are welcomed to join HDO in this new venture.
